Would it be possible (read, not a major pain in the butt to have threads log the searches people do? Mostly because it would be really helpful in determining what people are looking for most, figuring out if we have that information, and if not, how we can get it!, etc. (Ok, a very small part of me wants to know what those people who leave swearing they'll NEVER be back are actually searching for when they spend hours a week doing searches. And they're always invisible (because, of course, they'd never be back!) and I always just want to pop up a message that says, "Yes, we DO see you! " )

Hmmm... Not exactly sure how to pull that off... but that sounds like a great idea. Maybe something in dosearch.php that writes the search terms to a file. Yeah, if I had a nickel for everyone who left my forums and was still there..... I'd have alot of nickels.

Haven't tried this, but this should save the search information in the admin log: Find this code in dosearch.php: <br /> // ---------------------<br /> // Grab the tablewrapper<br /> list($tbopen,$tbclose) = $html -> table_wrapper();<br /> Add this ABOVE: <br /> admin_log("DOSEARCH", "Forum=$Forum, Words=$Words, Match=$Match, Searchpage=$Searchpage, Limit=$Limit, Old=$Old");<br />

You're welcome.
The admin_log is so easy to use it can be done for almost anything you want to keep track of.

Or... we could get more complicated and create a table in the database to store search words and the boards searched. Then we could query the table for various things such as how many times a specific word is searched for or what board is searched the most... SELECT COUNT(*) FROM w3t_SearchData WHERE S_Words LIKE '%LISA IS NOSEY%'

You know I really do like this idea though. Only one query would be needed per search to add the search terms, board and timestamp to the table. A number of stats could be created from this information.

phpBB does something like this. It uses some extra database tables for storing search words.

They use more than one table to store the search terms? How do they break it down? I was just thinking of a single table but maybe there's more that can be accomplished with 2 or more. It would definately give admins some insight in regards to their user's needs.

Yeah, that is a nice idea for a mod, I'd like that as well. Maybe a field to enter the number of search results for the query as well? But that would need an extra query unless MySQL 4 is used I believe.

[]They use more than one table to store the search terms? How do they break it down?[/] There are three tables. I don't know exactly how they're used. phpBB seems to use a more standardized approach to database design than UBB.threads, perhaps intended to comply with the database normalization rules. In places where UBB.threads would use one table, phpBB may use two or three, and rely more heavily on joins. Almost all the configuration settings are also stored in the database, rather than in files. OT: phpBB also uses a more consistent column-naming convention (which helps greatly in understanding the database), and is more consistent in its use of flags (1/0, instead of Y/N, yes/no, on/off, etc.).

Actually the log has been pretty interesting so far. (No former "I'll never return" members yet though. ) There are a lot of searches for a few stores we don't really push that much (and I guess maybe we should!) Having a separate log would be great though. It works fine in the admin log, but our admin log normally had about 50 entries a day, and the search increased it to around 300. That's a lot to glance over for a day. (Especially if you're nosy like me. )

I have had an ongoing problem for several months now whereby someone (probably a moderator) is editing people's posts and adding words like "gay" or other such things, or just editing them with an extra space to mess up the date in post tracking. It has been the bane of my admin life and has proven particularly elusive. Using the code below I FINALLY caught the culprit and banned him. The following code will add all post editing activity (by any user) to your admin log. Find this code in editpost.php: <br /> // ---------------------<br /> // Grab the tablewrapper<br /> list($tbopen,$tbclose) = $html -> table_wrapper();<br /> Add this above: <br /> admin_log("EDITPOST", "Forum=$Board, PostNumber=$Number);<br />

Thanks for sharing, that should go into the main code! I added the log to modifypost.php instead, so that there wouldn't be several entries for each change, only when something is actually done. Also the last " is missing, it should look like this: <br />admin_log("EDITPOST", "Forum=$Board, PostNumber=$Number");<br />
